I am in my 21st year as a teacher at Condong P.S. and our school has a strong relationship with Possums Preschool. The Director, Karen Shackell and her staff do a fabulous job, and in December 2014, Karen approached me with the results she, and her staff had observed and collated regarding the "possums" who would be transitioning to Condong for the 2015 kindergarten class. This was a direct result of a DEC policy to be trialled. The information and knowledge that Karen and her staff know about their pre-schoolers is incredibly comprehensive. And to have that information given to me in both the written form and a face-to-face meeting allowed me to understand more about the pre-schoolers than we have ever had.
The most enlightening part is where the children express their expectation of "big" school and the parents written hopes and goals and expectations for their child`s easy entry into Kindergarten. Along with Orientation days and preschoolers with siblings, this insight gave me a way to relate and allay any concerns and worries that would inhibit their first impressions and memories of beginning school.
I am truly in awe of the amount of time and effort that went into this transition statement from all concerned. However, for me, it was the most beneficial use of time and energy to have this information on hand to read back through and get a "picture" of the child, family and preschools preparation for their entry into a large part of their new life.
The realistic part is that these children are extremely well-prepared by the "Possums Preschool" Learning activities and comprehensive Curriculum and the consistent care and attention that is so evident in their own feelings of self-worth and confidence. When "Possums” come to our school to join in our activities, it is great to see all former student rush to greet Karen and her staff as they obviously have fond memories of their time at pre-school.
